Wake Forest University is committed to fostering an accessible workplace and learning environment that provides reasonable accommodations to support equal access and opportunity. The Office of Institutional Equity manages employee, applicant, and students’ non-academic accommodation requests.
About Accommodations at WFU
The University provides coordinated support through the following offices:
In accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, the University is committed to fostering an inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities. We strive to ensure nondiscrimination and facilitate participation in University programs, services, and activities.
- Students: The Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success (CLASS) coordinates academic and accommodations, while the University’s Section 504/ADA Administrator/Coordinator coordinates all other accommodations for students, such as housing and parking.
- Employees: The Office of Institutional Equity, within Human Resources, manages workplace accommodations for faculty and staff.
- Compliance and Grievances: OIE oversees allegations of disability-based discrimination.
Any community member who believes they have experienced discrimination or been denied access on the basis of a disability is encouraged to contact the Section 504/ADA Coordinator.
Detailed grievance procedures for the Reynolda and Bowman Gray (BGCME) campuses can be found under the “Disability Grievance Policies” tab in the navigation bar. For further information on student rights, please refer to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights.
How to Request Accommodations (Employees and Applicants)
Important definitions:
- Reasonable Accommodation: a reasonable modification or adjustment to a job, employment practice, or the work environment that makes it possible for a qualified employee to perform the essential functions of their position.
- Interactive Process: a collaborative dialogue between the employee/applicant, supervisor, and OIE (HR) office to determine appropriate accommodations.
How the accommodations process works:
Step 1: The employee or applicant completes the medical or pregnancy accommodation request form.
Step 2: The ADA/Section 504 Coordinator reviews the documentation.
Step 3: Coordinator, the employee or applicant, their supervisor, and, as appropriate, the departmental and academic leadership discuss the request.
Step 4: The ADA/Section504 coordinator determines and approves reasonable accommodations, which are implemented within a reasonable timeframe.
Step 5: Accommodations are modified and adjusted as needed over time.
