The University will keep the community informed of any changes to our operating hours due to inclement weather or other unusual conditions through Wake Alert emergency notifications. Faculty and staff are encouraged to download the Wake Safe App to receive safety and weather information. Here’s how emergency communications are shared and what you can do to stay informed.

Faculty and staff are urged to exercise caution when traveling during inclement weather. Colleagues should always use good judgment when determining if travel conditions are safe. If you are concerned about travel conditions, please consult your supervisor to discuss potential options.

Employee Expectations for Performing Work

Campus Closure

The University is not open during standard operating hours.

Employees who are not designated as Essential Personnel are not expected to work during a Closure; they are expected to return to their normal shift or work schedule the following day, unless otherwise specified by University announcements or their supervisor. 

Non-exempt non-essential personnel may enter Administrative Leave during a campus closure.

Delayed Opening

The University will open later than 8:30 a.m.

Employees who are not designated as Essential Personnel are not expected to report to work or work off-site until the time specified in the delay announcement. 

Non-exempt non-essential personnel employees may enter Administrative Leave for the hours campus is closed during a delayed opening.

Early Release

The University will close before
5 p.m.

In the interest of safety, employees who are not designated as Essential Personnel should leave campus at the time of closing. Employees who are not designated as Essential Personnel are not expected to perform work during the closure hours.

Non-exempt non-essential personnel employees may enter Administrative Leave for the hours campus is closed during an early release.


Essential Personnel Definitions

Essential Personnel denotes all employees who have been designated by the relevant Vice President or Dean as one of the following due to the essential services they may be required to provide during an emergency event: 

  1. Essential On-Site Personnel: Provide critical on-site services related to maintaining critical campus operations and safety (e.g., University Police and Facilities). 
  2. Essential Student Services Personnel: Support critical student services and amenities (e.g., Student Health Service, Residence Life and Housing, Z. Smith Reynolds Library). 
  3. Essential Business Continuity Services (Remote) Personnel: Support critical business continuity services in a remote modality (e.g., University Communications and Payroll).
Important

Not all essential personnel are required to perform work during an inclement weather or emergency event.

It is the responsibility of the supervisor to proactively communicate work expectations to their team members during an inclement weather or emergency event.
